Start Here: A Cleaner Home, One Room at a Time

Welcome to MrsClean! If you’ve ever looked around your home and wondered, “Where do I even start?” you’re in the right place.

I started my cleaning business in 1990, and this site is where I share what I’ve learned along the way. You’ll find practical advice for everyday messes, bigger cleaning jobs, and those little household puzzles that can take longer than they should.

You don’t have to clean the whole house today. Pick one room, choose one task, and start there.

First, Make a Little Room to Work

Before you reach for a cleaner, gather the trash, put away loose items, and move dishes or laundry where they belong. Clearing a surface makes it easier to clean—and gives you a quick bit of progress.

Then work from higher surfaces down, leaving the floors until last.

Start in the Kitchen

Dishes, crumbs, splashes, and crowded counters can make a kitchen feel messy in a hurry. Begin with the dishes and one clear stretch of counter. Then work your way around the room.

Freshen Up the Bathroom

If you only have a few minutes, put away countertop clutter, wipe the sink and faucet, and replace the hand towel. When you have more time, tackle the toilet, shower or tub, mirror, and floor.

Give Your Floors the Right Care

Floors collect everything we track through the house. Remove loose dirt first, then choose a cleaning method suited to your floor’s material and finish. Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions when selecting products and deciding how much moisture to use.

Make Room for Pets—and Their Messes

Our pets are part of the family, but fur, tracked litter, and everyday messes add to the cleaning routine. A little regular attention to their favorite spots helps keep the work manageable.

Only Have 15 Minutes?

Choose one small area and set a timer:

  • Gather trash and put away items that belong elsewhere.
  • Clear and wipe one counter or tabletop.
  • Sweep or vacuum the busiest part of the room.
  • Put your supplies away so they’re ready next time.

When the timer rings, take a look at what you’ve finished. Small jobs count.

Keep It Simple

Use products appropriate for the surface, follow their labels, and never mix cleaning products. Keep your supplies together so getting started takes less effort.

A comfortable home takes regular care, but it doesn’t need to be perfect. Start with the spot that’s bothering you most, finish one manageable job, and build from there.

Pick a room above, and let’s get started!
