Company’s Coming in 30 Minutes!

The phone rings. “We’ll be there in half an hour!”

You look around. There are dishes in the sink, shoes by the door, and a collection of things on the couch that don’t belong there.

Take a breath. You can make your home more welcoming in 30 minutes. Focus on the rooms your guests will use: the entryway, living room, bathroom, and kitchen.

Set a timer, grab a basket, and let’s get moving.

Minutes 0–5: Clear the Clutter

Take a basket through the areas your guests will see.

  • ☐ Gather loose toys, papers, clothing, and other items.
  • ☐ Collect cups and dishes and take them to the kitchen.
  • ☐ Pick up trash.
  • ☐ Clear a place for guests to sit and set down a drink.
  • ☐ Put the basket somewhere out of the way to sort after your visit.

MrsClean’s tip: Skip sorting the mail or organizing drawers. Those jobs can wait.

Minutes 5–12: Give the Bathroom Some Attention

A clean sink, a fresh towel, and toilet paper go a long way.

  • ☐ Put away personal items from the counter.
  • ☐ Clean the sink and faucet.
  • ☐ Wipe obvious spots from the mirror.
  • ☐ Clean the toilet bowl, seat, rim, and outside as needed.
  • ☐ Empty the wastebasket.
  • ☐ Put out a fresh hand towel.
  • ☐ Check the soap and toilet paper.

Use separate cleaning cloths for the toilet and other surfaces. Follow product directions, including any required contact time, and never mix cleaning products.

Minutes 12–19: Tidy the Kitchen

Concentrate on visible surfaces and anything causing an odor.

  • ☐ Load dishwasher-safe dishes into the dishwasher, or wash what you can.
  • ☐ Clear and wipe the main countertop.
  • ☐ Wipe the table if guests will use it.
  • ☐ Remove crumbs and food scraps from the sink.
  • ☐ Take out the trash if needed.
  • ☐ Put out a clean dish towel.

MrsClean’s tip: Leave the refrigerator shelves and oven interior for another day. Keep your attention on the space you’ll use together.

Minutes 19–25: Freshen the Living Room and Entryway

Now make the gathering space comfortable.

  • ☐ Straighten couch cushions and fold the throw.
  • ☐ Clear the coffee table and wipe visible marks.
  • ☐ Remove obvious pet hair from the seating.
  • ☐ Sweep or vacuum the main walking areas.
  • ☐ Line up shoes and make room for coats or bags.
  • ☐ Check that the path from the door is clear.

If you spot a floor spill, clean it and dry the area so nobody slips.

Minutes 25–30: Your Last Look

Walk through your home as though you’ve just arrived.

  • ☐ Is there a clear place to sit?
  • ☐ Is the bathroom ready?
  • ☐ Are the main surfaces tidy?
  • ☐ Are cleaning supplies put away, safely out of reach of children and pets?
  • ☐ Does anything need one final wipe?
  • ☐ Wash your hands and take a moment to get yourself ready.

Turn on a lamp if the room needs light. Set out glasses or mugs if you’re offering a drink.

Then stop cleaning when the doorbell rings.

Running Behind? Do These Three Things

If you have less time than you expected, concentrate on:

  1. The bathroom: Toilet, sink, fresh towel, soap, and toilet paper.
  2. The seating: Clear somewhere comfortable for everyone to sit.
  3. The clutter: Gather loose items and clear the walking paths.

That’s a useful improvement, even when the rest has to wait.

A Little Preparation for Next Time

Keep basic supplies together so you can find them quickly. A few clean cloths, appropriate surface cleaners, trash bags, and an empty gathering basket will help you get started.

After your guests leave, empty the basket and return its contents to their proper places.

Your friends came to spend time with you. Give them a comfortable place to sit, a warm welcome, and your attention.
